Living in Denver, Colorado who hasn’t been there when you need your lawn mower? Of course, it doesn’t want to start. That’s why today, I want to show you a couple of tips and tricks on how to get it started again.
Firstly, let’s have a look at the gas tank and make sure that it’s full. Especially after the winter break, it is possible that the gas isn’t good anymore, so we should completely replace it.
Next, let’s look at the gas line. Listen between the gas tank and the carburetor. Some lawnmowers have a shut-off valve at this location, so make sure it’s open so that the fuel can flow into the carburetor.
Now, let’s inspect the primer bulb. If there are any cracks, they must be replaced. In the upper right corner, you can find a link to a video that shows you how to do that.
Next, remove the cover of the air filter. Simply take the filter off and remove any dirt and debris. If it is too dirty, replace it. Before putting the filter back in place, examine the air intake for dirt and debris, and clean it as necessary.
Now, look at the spark plug. First, disconnect the spark plug connector, and then remove it with a spark plug wrench. This spark plug is already in bad shape, so it could be cleaned with a wire brush or replaced.
Next, check for a spark. To do that, reconnect the spark plug with the spark plug connector, and leave the spark plug against the engine block. And now that you’re trying to start the engine, you can see that there is a spark.
Everything is okay at this point. Put back the spark plug, making sure to only hand-tighten it. Also, don’t forget to reconnect the spark plug connector.
Next, check the engine oil. First, remove the dipstick. Wipe it off with a paper towel and put the stick back into the engine just to take it out right away again.
Now, it may not be clear from this video, but the oil level should be somewhere in this checkered area. If you’re not sure how to change the oil on your lawnmower, check out the link to that video here in the corner.
As the last step, check the carburetor for contamination. Underneath the float chamber, there’s this little screw – remove it. When you’re loosening it, the gas is going to come out, so make sure that the fuel valve is closed at this point.
Now that you’ve taken out the screw, let’s have a look inside the float chamber.
It’s pretty clean, but there may be dirt, in which case, clean it. Have a close look at the groove. There are small holes on the top and on the side, so make sure they’re really clean. This is essential!
Now that all these parts are clean, put them back together. Make sure to open up the shut-off valve. Then, see if the engine starts again. Push the power button, and pull the cord. And as you can see, it starts right back up.
